Researchers have provided evidence that walking pace (brisk, steady, or slow) can be used to predict the length of time individuals will spend in a healthy state before transitioning into a non-communicable disease state. This is significant because walking pace is an easy, non-clinical method of assessing level of physical activity, which is an important modifiable lifestyle attribute, that predicts physical fitness. Self-described brisk walkers spend more time healthy, and less time living with non-communicable diseases like cardiovascular disease or cancer, compared to self-described slow walkers.
